INDIGENOUS LEADERS CALL FOR "UPRISING" IN ECUADOR - February 28, 2010
On Friday, indigenous leaders met in Ambato, Ecuador and in a press conference have called for a permanent mobilization against the government. The Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador(CONAIE) did not reveal specifics as to their mobilization but made it clear that communications have broken down with the government. They announce a formation of a pluri-national parliament and have urged Ecuadorians to take action.
President Correa stated that the uprising is unfortunate and that any efforts to act outside of the law will be put down including acts of violence. CONAIE offered political support in his effort to gain the presidency. They have been involved in ousting other presidents from office. CONAIE believes that Correa has betrayed them and that the governement remains involved in extracting the wealth from the country. Indigenous groups (Shuar Nation) protested in September of 2009 against oil, water, and mining issues. Sources - Wire Reports
