TWO GERMAN STUDENTS KILLED IN BUS ACCIDENT - ECUADOR - February 23, 2010
On Sunday evening there was a bus crash on the route from Esmeraldas to Santo Domingo that claimed the lives of nine people and wounded 41 others. Among the dead were two nineteen year old female college students from Germany. They had been serving an internship with Caritas Social Aid Foundation based in Quito.
One of the students died after being transported to the hospital. It was reported in the press that looting of the bodies at the scene was committed. The two German women were difficult to identify as their passports had been taken. The name of the bus company was Gilberto Zambrano Cooperativo. The bus driver fled the scene.
It is a well known problem that bodies and accident scenes are often looted in Ecuador. Furthermore, it is highly recommended not to take bus transportation on the highways at night.
