British Airway's pilots will be voting in the next several weeks on whether or not to strike against the third largest airline in Europe. The pilots union is concerned about the new proposed airline by British Airways called Open Skies that will fly from Paris or Brussels to the U.S. European airlines will be allowed starting in late March 2008 to fly from Europe to the U.S. from other then their country based airline resides. Rains and floods continue to reek havoc in England and are expected to do so over the near term. Almost every river in Yorkshire is in threat of flooding. You can access flood information in England via the environment agency.

Rains and floods have affected much of the western region of England. The worst hit areas have been Bristol, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Somerset. Freezing temperatures are also making travel dangerous on roads. Rail traffic has been snarled as well in some cases cancelled between London and Wales. There is an ice warning.  BBC

Parking rules and fines change March 31, 2008, with stiffer penalties. In 2005 there were 3.4 million tickets issued. Between April 2006 and March 2007, there were 5 million parking citations issued  BBC

Strong rains are expected to continue as well as flooding in parts of Ireland. The most severely hit areas have been from Cork to Temporary. Heavy rains are expected through Sunday.

The Norovirus is wreaking havoc with hundreds of thousands in the United Kingdom. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has confirmed that 2007 has had the highest number of cases since 2002. It is also estimated that as many as 100,000 to 200,000 people a week are coming down with what is known as the "winter vomiting disease" which in most cases lasts two days. Contamination is often done either through contact with an infected person, contaminated food or water, and contaminated objects. Paracetamol may provide some relief. High liquid intake is also recommended.

5,000 airport workers for BAA have announced three work stoppages for January. Their dispute is primarily over pension issues. Planned stoppages are for January 7, 2008, January 14, 2007, and January 24, 2008, for 48 hours. The two strikes on January 7, 2008 and January 14, 2008, are for 24 hours begin at 6:00a.m.

Also, hurting air transportation is the filing of bankruptcy of Maxjet (http://www.maxjet.com)  which has stopped flying. U.S. Airways is attempting to help those customers affected.

Scotland has started a crackdown on human trafficking. It is estimated that Scotland accounts for 13 percent of the human trafficking in the United Kingdom. It has become an increasing problem that causes grave consequences for the women involved. Many of the women arrive in Scotland with the promise of work. Their passports are confiscated and they are often beaten and sexually abused until they comply with working as prostitutes. Many of the women have sex with as many as 20 men a day. They are often afraid of going to the police as they believe their families may be harmed in their home country. Officials report that Scotland usually accounts for 10 percent of the crime in the United Kingdom.
