Mutant Message Down Under, Tenth Anniversary Edition

Queensland Rail inland train services have been stopped for several days because of intense rain and flooding. The result has been damage to much of the tracks. Efforts are being made to restore services by the weekend. Numerous roads have also been closed in the Emerald vicinity.

The Australian Crime Commission (ACC) in a new report on crime in Australia believes organized crime is costing Australia $10 billion a year. It indicates that syndicates are becoming more sophisticated and that technology is in high use, especially with identity theft.

Overall, deaths on Victoria's roads were lower in 2007. Nevertheless, since December 21st, 2007, the state had the highest number of deaths in Australia with 14.

Much of the Queensland coast is under a severe risk of being battered by tropical cyclone Melanie (Category 2 at present). The areas between Exmouth and Broome are at high risk.  Risk of high rains Sunday evening.

Tropical Cyclone Melanie is moving on a west southwesterly track. Residents between Rim Creek and Coral Bay - Gale Force winds expected.

December 27, 2007-

Three male tourists from Spain were stabbed last evening during a confrontation with another group of men. The incident took place in the tourist area of King's Cross.

Miscellaneous safety facts:

Most armed robberies are committed with a knife. Australia has very stringent gun laws.

It is believed that the increase in armed robberies is a result of the use methamphetamine.
