PRESIDENT OF CONAIE CALLS FOR PROTESTS BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 27, 2009 

Marlon Santi the president of CONAIE (Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador) announced today that they will stage a protest beginning September 27, 2009, that will paralyze the country. CONAIE and other indigenous groups were once allies with president Correa and now are at odds regarding mining and water issues. Santi stated the protests will be peaceful but, would not give specifics as to what is called for except that primary and secondary roads may be interceptected and block normal movement of traffic throughout the country. Indigenous groups are predicting that if the National Assembly does not pass new resolutions with their proposals by October 13, 2009, that the country will become chaos. (TRAVEL SAFETY ECUADOR)
