COUNTERFEIT U.S. BILLS FROM PERU CONTINUE TO INVADE ECUADOR
A Peruvian national in Ecuador illegally, was apprehended in Cuenca by authorities. He was in possession of over $18,000 in counterfeit bills. The bills were manufactured in Peru and were in ten and twenty dollar denominations. Each ten dollar bill would sell in the market for two-dollars and the twenty-dollar bills fetch four dollars.
Counterfeit U.S. currency continues to plague Ecuador and all travelers should be alert when receiving change or receiving money from an ATM machine. Also, be careful not to accept bills that are torn or written on. Often times merchants will try to pass these types of bills on to unsuspecting individuals. If you are given these type of bills, no one will be willing to accept them. Also, never accept fifty or one hundred dollar denominations. They are very difficult to use.
