ECUADOR STUDENTS TARGETED FOR THEFT AND ASSAULTS - March 15, 2010
In the past two years a public study reveals that there has been 87,215 crime reports of robberies and assaults in Ecuador. In January alone there were 222 robberies reported in Quito.
Students are a primary target for thieves especially along bus stops. Most thieves are after laptops, calculators and cellphones. Many of these items are fenced through black markets which are located in the La Plaza Arenas and Centro Comercial Montúfar. Violence has also been involved in a number of reported robberies.
Currently among the most dangerous areas of Quito are Ave. Napo, Av. América, Av. Gran Colombia, Av Naciones Unidas.
Crime rates in Ecuador may be higher then the figures stated above as many crimes go unreported.
