FALSE ALARM SPREADS VIA SOCIAL MEDIA ALERTING TO EARTHQUAKE IN GUAYAQUIL - March 03, 2010
At 1:52 A.M on Wednesday a rumor began in Guayaquil, Ecuador that an earthquake was going to strike the port city at 3:00 am. The Naval Oceanographic Institute of the navy (INOCAR) denied that any earthquake hit the city. There contact number is 04-2481300.
Hugo Yepes, the director of the Geophysics Institute stated in an interview on Teleamazonas that Ecuadorians should prepare for an earthquake. Statistically a major quake usually strikes every decade and the last was in 1998 that registered 7.1. He stated the last twelve years have been pretty quiet. He said it is inevitable.
