REMITTANCES DOWN SHARPLY IN ECUADOR FROM ABROAD
The
Banco Central of Ecuador reported that remittances from abroad are down 21% compared to the same period in 2008. Remittances were 1.2 billion usd compared to 1.5 billion. The economic crisis in the United States and Europe has had a severe impact on employment. Furthermore, many Ecuadorians are returning from Europe because of the situation in Europe and the U.S. Remittances are crucial to supporting the economy in Ecuador.We believe with fewer dollars and Ecuadorians returning will place more stress on the current depressed employment outlook in Ecuador. This may contribute to increased crime rates.
